How to compare water treatment quotes
A checklist for Indianapolis and Fort Wayne homeowners choosing a water softener, filter or drinking-water system.
1. Name the problem and the water supply
Write down your utility name or note that you use a private well. List what you want to improve: scale, spots, taste, odor, staining or drinking-water convenience. Gather any existing test results. A quote should explain which concern it addresses.
2. Ask for the actual equipment model
Compare the model number, capacity, intended use and documented performance. A general statement about filtration is not a specification for the system going into your home. Ask the provider to explain why the proposed equipment fits your water conditions and usage.
3. Compare the installation scope
- Equipment location and plumbing connections
- Removal or bypass of existing equipment, if needed
- Any required drain, electrical or faucet work
- Startup and instructions for operation
- Who performs the installation and handles follow-up
4. Compare ongoing costs
Record expected salt, cartridge, media or membrane replacement and maintenance requirements for each proposal. Ask which tasks you can do yourself and which require a service visit. Review warranty coverage and exclusions in writing.
5. Record the full price and payment terms
Ask what is included, what could change the price and when payment is due. If financing is offered, review the actual written financing terms separately from the equipment recommendation. Keep copies of the proposal and installation scope.
6. Confirm the appointment
Check the service address, agreed date, access requirements and who needs to be home. A submitted request is not a booked appointment until the team confirms it.

Find information for your supply
For utility-served homes, check your provider’s own report. Start with Citizens Energy Group’s Indianapolis-area reports or Fort Wayne City Utilities’ reports if that is your provider. These do not replace a home-specific assessment or private-well testing.
